Alan Shearer tells Ruben Amorim his immediate Man Utd priority - and who can solve it

Manchester United have struggled for goals so far in the Premier League with Alan Shearer advising Ruben Amorim to raid his former team for marksman Viktor Gyökeres

Alan Shearer believes adding a prolific frontman should be Ruben Amorim's priority at Manchester United - and has urged him to raid Sporting Lisbon for Viktor Gyökeres.

The Portuguese manager is closing in on his move to Old Trafford, where he will inherit an underperforming team who are languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League. Among their many issues is a lack of goals with the Red Devils among the lowest scorers in the top flight.

Their haul of eight is only better than newly promoted Southampton, who are in the bottom three, and Crystal Palace. Erik ten Hag signed strikers in two of his summers in charge - Rasmus Hojlund and then Joshua Zirkzee.

Neither has delivered the numbers the club needs and Shearer believes Amorim should consider signing Gyökeres for a second time. Since he moved from Coventry City to Sporting in 2023 the Swede has hit an incredible 59 goals in 65 games.

The Premier League great told Betfair: "Whichever new manager takes the role, the priority must be to get a big-hitter centre forward in because, as much as I think there's a player in Rasmus Hojlund, the ask of him at his age and where he's at now, is too much.

"Ruben Amorim would look at the team and identify what's been problematic for Man United in the last year or two and without doubt scoring goals is one of them. Whether they can go and get Viktor Gyökeres, in terms of how much money they've spent already, we'll have to wait and see."

Sporting themselves have shown that they are willing to cash in on their top stars for the right price. They will already make a huge profit on Gyökeres, but may be loathed to lose their manager and arguably their best player in quick succession.

That said, The Swedish star's agent, Hasan Cetinkaya, has previously insisted he took his player to Sporting purely because of Amorim, despite interest from the Premier League, with a reunion potentially on the cards.

"Everyone was waiting for Viktor to sign with a Premier League club," he told Portuguese publication Record. "I brought Viktor to Sporting for just one reason, and this is also something I said to Mr Amorim when I saw him for the first time. I said it before I even said hello to him: 'I only brought my player here because of you'. Therefore, I only brought Gyokeres to Sporting because of Ruben Amorim.

"There were eight Premier League clubs who made concrete proposals to Coventry and me, which guaranteed more money, more commissions and a higher transfer value than Sporting. I said no to everyone and told Viktor that Sporting was our next destination.”
