Damar Hamlin, the Buffalo Bills safety, has ticked a major milestone off his career checklist by securing his first interception during a high-profile game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

In the second quarter with just over four minutes on the clock, Jaguars' star quarterback Trevor Lawrence was pressured into making a hasty throw intended for receiver Brian Thomas Jr. However, the pass missed its mark and flew straight into the waiting arms of an alert Hamlin.

The safety dashed with the ball before being pushed out of bounds by the opposition's defense. His triumph was met with thunderous applause from the NFL crowd, who were ecstatic to celebrate Hamlin's impressive defensive play.

Hamlin, surrounded by his teammates in the end zone, basked in the adulation from fans, fulfilling his ambition to be recognized for his football prowess rather than solely for his harrowing cardiac arrest incident.

Back in mid-September, speaking to NFL.com, Hamlin had expressed his determination to be acknowledged for his talent on the field. "I don't want to be just known as the player who lived," Hamlin said. "My story is my story. It's still being written. but I want to be known for my abilities as well. I've always had big goals on and off the field. I have so much more that I want to accomplish."

Hamlin has opened up about the lasting impact of his cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals in January 2023, admitting it's now an integral part of his identity. "People move on with their life and they think about it when they see me," he said.

"I can't move on. It's a part of me. I do still have flashbacks sometimes. And within my day-to-day, I definitely think about it. I've learned to appreciate those moments in my life. But when I play a game now, those three hours, I'm only thinking about football."

The incident has led Hamlin to consider all aspects of his life, not just his football career."To give everybody some more perspective, I would just say, trust what you know and trust what got you here," he said.

"Along the journey of the ups and downs, I had my own, he had his own, and we were able to keep each other, hold each other accountable to what got us there in the moment... I'm trying to take care of all opportunities that I can. I'm trying to capitalise on all business opportunities. I want to make sure I'm setting myself up for the future."

Despite the challenges he's faced, Hamlin is determined to achieve more, including his aspiration to end his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He shared this goal while speaking at an event in Pittsburgh, telling the audience of his desire to retire as a Steeler.

"I think ending my career, finishing, as a Pittsburgh Steeler would be a dream," he said at the time. "I played at Pitt so you know I was in the stadium. I played at Heinz Field probably for like eight years straight between WPIAL championships and Pitt so a dream come true would be finishing my career as a Steeler."
