England and Greece will share a minute's silence and wear black armbands in their Nations League match on Thursday after former Sheffield United defender George Baldock tragically died. The 31-year-old was found in his Athens-based home on Wednesday night.

Baldock played over 13 seasons in England across a number of clubs throughout the EFL and eventually in the top division with the Blades before moving to Panathinaikos over the summer. Having made his international debut for Greece in 2022, he managed 12 caps.

England and their opponents will pay respect to Baldock before Thursday's group stage game with a minute's silence prior to kick off. Both sides will then wear black armbands throughout. Kick It Out founder, Lord Herman Ouseley, will also have his life celebrated after he died last week.

Baldock, who was living in southern Greece before he was found at 10:30pm on October 9 in his swimming pool, played 219 times for Sheffield United, helping them reach the Premier League on two occasions. Initial coroner's findings suggest he drowned

He was one of the standout players in Chris Wilder's impressive side that pioneered an overlapping centre-back system. A graduate of the English football pyramid, Baldock also played for MK Dons, Oxford United, Tamworth Town, and Northampton Town. He made 137 Premier League appearances.

"As a family we are in shock at this terrible loss," a statement reads from his loved ones. Panathinaikos themselves wrote: "We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George. The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock."

Baldock most recently played for the Greek Super League side on Sunday. He made four appearances having missed the start of the season with injury.

Former side Sheffield United also sent their condolences. "The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him."
