Ruud van Nistelrooy is happy to remain in caretaker charge of Manchester United until a deal is in place for Ruben Amorim to take over as the club's next permanent manager.

Van Nistelrooy's temporary reign got off to a flying start with a 5-2 win against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup fourth round and after the game he said he would also be willing to stay on as part of Amorim's coaching staff.

The 48-year-old returned to Old Trafford in the summer as one of Erik ten Hag's new assistant managers, but with his compatriot sacked on Monday, Van Nistelrooy has been placed in charge until a permanent manager is found.

That man will be Amorim, with United agreeing a fee with Sporting for the 39-year-old head coach on Wednesday, though it remains to be seen when he will make the move. His start could be pushed back into the middle of November if he is told to serve his notice period.

That could lead to Van Nistelrooy's interim spell stretching to several games, but having got off to such a good start that is a prospect he is happy with.

Asked if he will stay on until a permanent manager is in place, he said: "Of course – I came here as an assistant to help the club. Now in this role, I’m helping as long as needed. In the future in any capacity, I’m here to help the club further to build towards the future, that’s what I'm here for."

Amorim is set to bring several coaches with him from Sporting and there are likely to be more changes to the coaching structure at Carrington, but Van Nistelrooy is open to taking on a role in the new set-up.

"I’m here to help and serve and give my everything for the club in any capacity with so many people here around me that want the best for the club and that will never change," he said.
