Is there extra time in Carabao Cup? Rules on penalties for Man United and Man City
by Matthew Abbott · Manchester Evening NewsThe Carabao Cup fourth round continues tonight with Manchester City and Manchester United playing for a place in the quarter-finals.
Both clubs beat opponents from the English Football League (EFL) in the third round but are involved in two of five all-Premier League ties this time. United hosts Leicester City at Old Trafford, while City are in the capital facing Tottenham Hotspur.
Elsewhere in the competition, Brighton and Hove Albion are welcoming Liverpool to the south coast, Chelsea are at Newcastle United, and Aston Villa play Crystal Palace. The only other tie involves Arsenal visiting Preston North End of the Championship.

Six of those sides will join Brentford and Southampton in the quarter-finals. The Bees needed penalties to overcome Sheffield Wednesday after their match ended in a 1-1 draw. Meanwhile, the Saints narrowly avoided an upset after giving up a 2-0 lead before a late James Bree goal put them back ahead for good.
A penalty shoot-out would have likely ensued if he had not scored, as it did just 72 miles away in west London. In the Carabao Cup, barring the semi-final and final, penalties decide the tie if a match ends in a draw after 90 minutes.
Extra time is no longer in use for the early rounds of the competition, but as last season's final at Wembley showed, this is only sometimes the case. Just before the 120th minute, Virgil van Dijk scored a header to secure the trophy for Liverpool against Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.
Such a scenario is impossible at this stage of the competition. It's also worth noting that VAR will only be used once the semi-finals begin in the new year.
