Blunt Erik ten Hag makes point as Manchester United duo snubbed

Manchester United take on FC Porto tonight in the Europa League with Erik ten Hag desperate for a victory to relieve some of the pressure building on him.

The Reds are 13th after a dismal defeat at home to Tottenham last weekend in the Premier League. United are understood to be sticking with the Dutchman for now but defeat tonight and again at Aston Villa on Sunday could hasten a decision at Old Trafford.

United drew their Europa League opener with FC Twente and travel to Portugal chasing a win to kickstart their European ambitions. With kick-off to come at 8pm, we have rounded up the United headlines from the day so far.

United duo snubbed

Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford have been left out of Lee Carsley's England squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Greece and Finland.

While the decision to leave out Rashford, who hasn't been included in an England squad since March but the decision to exclude Maguire, who started in last month's win over Ireland, has come as a surprise.

Maguire has been a regular for England since 2017 but he has seemingly paid the price for a lack of game-time at United, having featured in just 16 minutes of Premier League action since the last international break.

Ten Hag makes point

A familiar face looms outside the Porto club shop. It is not the only image in the concrete bowl that deifies Jose Mourinho.

Opposite the press room is a canvas of Mourinho kissing the European Cup. Hovering above the entrance to the museum is Porto's treasure trove of trophies. The manager of their guests on Thursday night has spoken ad infinitum about his own collection.

It was not an auspicious start to Erik ten Hag's week that Manchester United's plane landed two hours and 40 minutes later than scheduled. Their season is also yet to take off.

Flight tracker showed United, hovering above Braga, going round in circles in a holding pattern. Foggy and drizzly weather in Porto caused severe delays to flights. United have form for tardiness on European aways, having arrived more than half-an-hour late for their pre-match press engagements in Munich and Copenhagen last year.
