Marcus Rashford makes England feelings clear after snub and Thomas Tuchel hope

by · Manchester Evening News

Despite his recent absence from the England squad, Marcus Rashford has expressed his enduring affection for the Three Lions.

The 26-year-old striker, who has already earned 60 caps and scored 17 goals for his country, has recently fallen out of favour. His last appearance for England was as a substitute in a 1-0 loss to Brazil at Wembley in March.

Furthermore, he was not included in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad for Euro 2024. However, this seems to have had no impact on his relationship with the national team.

After England's social media profile shared highlights of their 3-1 victory over Italy last year - a match in which Rashford scored - the Manchester United forward responded with a red heart emoji. In that game, Gianluca Scamacca put Italy ahead before Harry Kane equalised from the penalty spot.

Rashford then gave England the lead with a precise low finish, and Kane added another to secure the win and England's place at the Euros in Germany. Despite England qualifying for the tournament, Rashford was not included in Southgate's final squad.

Speaking on Rashford's omission, the former England manager said: "These are of course difficult calls. We're talking about players who are very good and who have been an important part of what we've done over a number of years. With Marcus I just feel that players in that area of the pitch have had better seasons, it's as simple as that."

Regardless of the decision, Rashford still showed his support for the team, expressing his well-wishes on Instagram: "Wishing Gareth and the boys all the best for the up and coming tournament." England had a strong run in Germany, making it to their second consecutive Euros final but ultimately fell to defeat against Spain, with Mikel Oyarazbal netting the all-important goal.

In the aftermath of this summer's campaign, Southgate stepped down from his role, with the FA completing their search for a new leader this week. Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has agreed to an 18-month contract and will lead the national team through to the 2026 World Cup, should they qualify, starting his tenure in the New Year.

Rashford is no doubt keen to impress and secure a spot in Tuchel’s first squad.
