Latest Man United injury news as five face missing Aston Villa with Kobbie Mainoo return

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag didn't get the win he would have wanted in Portugal on Thursday meaning Sunday's trip to Aston Villa awaits with intense pressure.

Harry Maguire came off the bench to rescue a point for United against FC Porto after they squandered a 2-0 lead. Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund put Ten Hag's men 2-0 ahead in the first-half but the hosts levelled before the break.

After Samu Omorodion put Porto ahead in the 50th minute, United looked destined for another frustrating defeat. However, Maguire relieved some of the pressure weighing heavy on Ten Hag with a storming header.

This weekend, in what could be the Dutchman's final game in charge, United take on Aston Villa in the Premier League. The Red Devils have won just three games in all competitions this season and defeat at Villa Park would mean they've lost four of seven league fixtures.

Ten Hag will be without a number of first-team players for Sunday's trip. Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo picked up a suspected hamstring injury against Tottenham and wasn't deemed fit enough to play in Porto.

He did participate in training at Boavista on Friday morning so there are hopes that he may feature on Sunday. Mason Mount could also return despite not taking part in training before Porto.

The midfield pair are the two latest injury concerns for United with the main problem at defence. Luke Shaw, Leny Yoro and Tyrell Malacia have all missed every game so far this season meaning Ten Hag has been forced to play with a makeshift back four.

Alejandro Garnacho and Maguire had both appeared to have knocks in the week but came off the bench against Porto. Marcus Rashford is also not injured despite coming off at half-time.
