Gary Neville raises familiar Manchester United concern amid Erik ten Hag pressure

by · Manchester Evening News

Gary Neville believes that Manchester United's lack of fire-power from set-pieces is one of three reasons why they are not scoring enough. Erik ten Hag's side are the second-lowest scorers in the Premier League this season, having netted just five goals in seven matches so far.

Only Southampton (four) have scored fewer across the top-flight, while both Wolves (nine) and Ipswich (six) have found the net more without actually winning a single game. Alongside that mark, United have picked up only eight points from a possible 21 - representing their worst ever start to a Premier League season.

It has been an awful start to the campaign from United and the lack of fire-power at the top end of the pitch is, no doubt, a massive concern for the club, and their manager. Neville, meanwhile, believes there are three clear reasons behind why United have been so lacklustre in attacking quarters.

Neville told The Stick to Football podcast: "I think [the lack of scoring goals] is quite easy to explain. One is that I think they are really poor on set-pieces and that's one big way in which teams score goals.

"Secondly, do you have a record of players in the team that are good at scoring goals? No they don't. They have got [Marcus] Rashford, who to be fair has had a couple of decent seasons, and [Bruno] Fernandes who has had a couple of decent seasons. Other than that, no-one in that front-line or midfield has a history of scoring goals."

He went on: "When you haven't got that, the combinations and patterns of play are where you get chances, so when you don't have patterns of play or combinations, which to be fair are repetitive, you never know when to make a run in the box, for example. My point is that... those three things contribute to the [lack of] goals."
