Rodri confirms Man City were 'wrong' about Pep Guardiola as he makes exit admission

by · Manchester Evening News

Speculation has been rife about the future of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

The Catalan's contract at the Etihad Stadium is due to expire at the end of this season, and there has been no news of a renewal so far. Guardiola is currently in his ninth season with the club, during which he has led them to six Premier League titles in eight seasons. His trophy haul also includes two FA Cups, four League Cups, the Champions League, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

However, after securing a fourth consecutive Premier League title last season - a historic first - Guardiola hinted at a possible departure, saying he was "closer to leaving than staying". He later clarified these comments over the summer, stating: "I know maybe I was not correct to say in the right moment, when we won the Premier League, but I'm saying that I've been eight years in Man City so I'm not being here for eight more years."

Meanwhile, Ballon d'Or winner Rodri, who is currently sidelined with an ACL injury, has been discussing various topics with Cope in Spain, including a potential bombshell regarding Guardiola.

Rodri, when questioned about his tenure at the Etihad and the potential impact of Pep Guardiola's future decisions, commented: "You want to be surrounded by the best and there will be a before and after Pep. When I signed, they told me that Guardiola was leaving but he is very ambitious. When he is gone, things will change but City will continue to be City."

Back when Rodri joined City in 2019, he was aware of rumours stating Guardiola would be parting ways with the club. However, five years on, Guardiola remains.

Speculation suggests major developments could happen next summer, with many keeping a close eye on the situation, including Premier League contenders Arsenal and Liverpool.
