Sir Alex Ferguson shows true colours with rousing team talk – 'I can't thank him enough'

by · Manchester Evening News

Sir Alex Ferguson's winning mentality boosted the Wigan Warriors rugby league team ahead of their Super League Grand Final to secure the quadruple.

The Warriors beat Hull Kingston Rovers 9-2 to win a second successful title at Old Trafford - and also became the first Super League club to win all four major trophies during the same season. The team, led by United fan Matt Peet, also won the League Leaders' Shield, the World Club Challenge and the Challenge Cup to complete a historic quadruple.

Peet, who has previously named Ferguson as one of his coaching role models, revealed after the match that he had arranged for the iconic Scotsman to visit the Warriors players and speak with them the night before the important match.

Ferguson is known for his strict managerial approach and success at Old Trafford, becoming the most successful manager Manchester United has ever had. With almost three decades in the hot seat, Ferguson won two Champions League titles, 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups, and one European Winners' Cup.

With 49 major trophies won under Ferguson's guidance, one of the Scotsman's most famous victories was when the United squad clinched the first-ever Triple, which included the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. Peet cited this achievement as he described the iconic manager's team talk to his players, claiming that he felt the Warriors were on the path to something similar with the quadruple.

The 40-year-old said: "Sir Alex presented all of the lads' jerseys. We reached out through a mutual friend. We just thought that we were on the verge of something similar to when United won the Treble. Playing at Old Trafford and with Sir Alex building careers by developing homegrown talent, with his mentality, we thought he’d be the perfect person."

Peet hailed Ferguson's "epic" speech and claimed that the 82-year-old had a commanding presence that could quiet any room, which stunned both him and his players. He added: "Fortunately, we could make that happen and he was epic, as you can imagine.

"You hung on every word he said, but it was more about his presence. I’ve never seen the lads so quiet. Having a leader like that and a humble man like he was as well, you could hear a pin drop. I can never thank him enough for that."
