Man United fire clear Ruben Amorim Man City dig after stunning Champions League display

Manchester United's social media team could not resist aiming a subtle dig at rivals Manchester City after they ended up on the wrong side of a heavy 4-1 defeat to Sporting CP on Tuesday night.

Not only that, but it was to the incumbent United boss, Ruben Amorim. Taking charge of his penultimate game of Sporting after agreeing to become head coach at Old Trafford - a position he will start at in less than one week's time - Amorim dished out a tough result for Pep Guardiola to stomach.

Despite taking an early lead, City were punished by an on-fire Viktor Gyokeres. Two penalties, a lethal breakaway, and fast attacking play moments after half-time later, Sporting came out resounding victors. With less than 20 days until Amorim is due to face Ipswich Town in his first game as United manager, it certainly excited supporters.

Taking the chance to rub salt in the wounds of their fierce rivals, United's online activity reflected the joy that followed Sporting's win. Choosing to repost the announcement of Amorim joining, United picked the perfect time to get one back at City at full-time.

Popping up on feeds across the world, United's post of "Ruben Amorim will join United on Monday, November 11, [timer and Portugal flag emoji]" was seen. "Manchester United reposted" loomed above, indicating the very deliberate play to celebrate their new manager's success.

The 39-year-old himself, whilst happy to revel in the historic night, was keen not to look too far ahead. "It's misleading," he said of the scoreline. "We were very lucky today in the game, like I was explaining.

"The feeling with my players, the way they celebrate this win, the moment with the fans was very, very special. I bring this to the Premier League. When I arrive there it's a different world, a different pressure. I will try and be the same so we will fun, very fun. I am ready for the challenge."

Amorim will have one last outing as the public face of Sporting, a club he has transformed. From no titles in 19 years to two in the last four, and thanks in large part to what Amorim has created, well on the way to another this season. His side travel to Braga, where he played and managed in the past.

The celebrations have been completed in front of Sporting fans. Amorim was serenaded, rewarded, juggled by his players, and, as it was fitting of his time there, victorious. Don't United know it, too.
