'Pure quality' - Roy Keane responds to Angel Gomes moment amid Man United transfer hope

by · Manchester Evening News

Manchester United legend Roy Keane and former Arsenal striker Ian Wright have raved about Angel Gomes' moment of brilliance during England's Nations League tie with Finland.

The Three Lions entered half-time a goal to the good after a sensational pass from the ex-United midfielder fed Jack Grealish through to give his country the lead. The assist capped what has been a brilliant first-half performance by the 24-year-old on just his third appearance for the senior team.

Analysing the goal at half-time, Keane raved to ITV Sport about Gomes' talent: "A real bit of quality. A brilliant goal, if you saw France or Spain score a goal like this you'd be praising them.

"Nice and patient, Gomes doing what you do, passing it forward, and he just seems to wander in there. Jack draws a few players over, which obviously helps him eventually when he gets in there.

"But this pass again, Trent [Alexander-Arnold], nice and simple. Sharp, these couple of touches from Gomes and this last piece... honestly. Pure quality.

"Lovely and obviously Jack finishes it off but a really lovely bit of quality." Echoing his fellow pundit's thoughts, Wright added: "It's really good to see, in that area because he is not just a progressor of the ball.

"He can, if he gets into that number ten area, do this. Just brilliant.

"I think one of the things that I saw which was noticeable was him and Declan [Rice] being so high up as a two maybe holding players but at the same time they have got cover. In this instance, the offensive play from them was brilliant."

United's midfield is a constant source of problems at present with first Casemiro and then Manuel Ugarte earning criticism for their performances in the holding midfield role. Gomes' contract at Lille is due to expire at the end of the season and there is a hope among some sections of the Reds' fanbase that they may look to snap him up if and when he becomes a free agent.
