Simone Inzaghi's Man United stance as Ineos make 'international break approach'

by · Manchester Evening News

Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi has rejected an approach from Manchester United to become their next manager, according to reports in Italy.

Current manager Erik ten Hag has been under pressure this week following the heavy 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. This led to calls from large sways of the fanbase to seek a change of leadership.

There are currently four favourites with the bookmakers to take over at Old Trafford. Assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy leads the way ahead of ex-England manager Gareth Southgate and former Chelsea bosses Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel.

However, this has not stopped other names being thrown into the conversation. One such name is Inzaghi and according to Sport Italia, he was approached by the Reds as they 'frantically' tried to decide whether to stick or twist.

It is suggested by their journalist Tancredi Palmeri that Ineos approached Inzaghi to take on the job during the international break but the 48-year-old rejected these advances. Inzaghi's stock in world football is currently high having led Inter to Serie A glory last season and the Champions League final the year before that.

Inter have had a steady start to this season and currently sit five points behind leaders Napoli who have played a game more. MEN Sport understands there was never a prospect of Ten Hag being sacked before Sunday's clash with Aston Villa in the Premier League.

But the jury remains out as to whether the Dutchman will be allowed to carry on in the job beyond this weekend even if the Reds win at Villa Park.
