Ruben Amorim isn’t who Paul Scholes wanted as he fears Man United making same mistake

by · Manchester Evening News

Paul Scholes is worried that Manchester United have lined up another Erik ten Hag in Ruben Amorim.

Amorim, 39, has agreed a deal to takeover the reins at Old Trafford, with the club moving swiftly after Ten Hag was sacked. The Sporting Lisbon manager has an outstanding reputation in his native Portugal having won two league titles in four seasons, including a league and cup double in his first campaign.

Despite his record, Scholes is worried he could face the same struggles as the Dutchman and is disappointed United did not hire Thomas Tuchel. Considering Ten Hag joined the club having won three Eredivisie titles in four seasons, the former United midfielder fears Amorim's methods similarly may not translate into success in the Premier League.

Scholes said at The Overlap Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet: "I think Thomas Tuchel was the right one to coach Manchester United, but obviously he's gone now with England. He's someone that can manage an elite football club and win big games. He's been there and done it.

"I agree on Ruben Amorim - it [the hype] feels a bit like Erik ten Hag [when he joined United]. He's coming from the Portuguese league which is a bit better than the Dutch league.

"What he's done there has been good, he looks charismatic, and he has a bit about him. I know he's meant to sign in the coming days and hours, but Sporting play Manchester City next week, and Arsenal in the next three or four weeks it might be a chance to give him a public interview, and see how he handles the media, see how his team plays.

"In England, we don't watch a lot of Portuguese football, so we don't know too much. We see them a bit in European football, and all the things we hear about him are good exciting football, three at the back and possession based something United don't really do. If he comes in to do that, it could be exciting."

Sporting recently announced that United are willing to pay his £8.3 million release clause. They wrote: "Manchester United FC expressed an interest in paying Sporting SAD the amount of the aforementioned clause."

Amorim previously declined the chance to manage West Ham United in the summer and was also heavily linked with a move to Liverpool. Sporting are currently topping the charts in the Portuguese top-flight, boasting a perfect record with nine wins out of nine, 30 goals scored and only two conceded.

They also sit eighth in the Champions League table, which would secure them an automatic spot in the last 16 of the Champions League should they remain there. Amorim recently broke his silence in regard to the links. After Sporting overcame Nacional 3-1 in the Taca de Liga on Tuesday night, he said: "We don't know if it's a farewell game, or if there will be one; that's still not been decided.

"In this moment, I have nothing to say and everything that I say will cause more noise. There's nothing concrete to say right now, but when I have to speak about the subject, I will. When I have something concrete to say and not just something that will fuel speculation, I will.

"We still don't know the finer details, and therefore we will see. But everything I say now will only fuel speculation. When I have something to say, and I've always been clear about my decisions. And the decision is mine as the statement stated."
