Man United handed incentive after manager makes feelings clear after contact

by · Manchester Evening News

The future of who presides over Manchester United remains uncertain as Erik ten Hag continues to face scrutiny.

With the Premier League on hold for another two-week break, for the latest round of international fixtures, United find themselves languishing in mid-table. Speculation swirls over whether the former Ajax manager will be in situ or if there will be a new man at the helm.

Thomas Tuchel has emerged as a front-runner to return to the top flight following his stint with Chelsea, but further uncertainty over the vacant England manager position has seen the German's name mooted with the Wembley hot seat.

United return to action when they face Brentford on Saturday (3pm kick-off). Thomas Frank's side have had an indifferent start with three wins and as many defeats in their opening seven fixtures, but they sit two points clear of Ten Hag's side.

It is an important period at Old Trafford with key decisions to be made, MEN Sport takes a look at the latest news surrounding United.

Man United could be on red-alert after chief admission

Manchester United are among the Premier League clubs linked with a move for Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush.

The 25-year-old has emerged as a potential candidate for Liverpool, next summer, as they face increasing links with a replacement for Mohamed Salah.

Marmoush is said to have rejected a move to the Premier League during the most recent transfer window, as he turned down Nottingham Forest.

United have been suggested to have an interest, while Arsenal are another club supposedly in the hunt. Frankfurt chief Markus Krosche admitted that he isn't unsellable.

"It is true that Omar made a very clear commitment to us in the summer," he told the press. "He has developed well and still has a lot of potential to develop further.

"For us, we don’t want to lose so many key players. I have to honestly say that no Eintracht player is unsellable but we want to keep the team together. I talk about Marmoush after every game. But that's a good thing. Omar gives our game an incredible amount."

MEN Sport says: There is no doubt that Marmoush has the quality to play in the Premier League and the reports emphasise that. But whether United need another wide-player in attacking areas is up for debate. Alejandro Garnacho has been a breath of fresh air on the right under Ten Hag, but to spare the burden being put on the young Argentine, looking to add strength in depth could be a sensible option.

Manager turned down United approach

According to reports in Germany, VfB Stuttgart manager Sebastian Hoeness turned down the opportunity to manage Manchester United. The German enjoyed a strong start with the Bundesliga club, guiding them to second - behind Bayer Leverkusen - last term.

With Champions League football in the fixture calendar, Hoeness opted to stay in Baden-Württemberg.

Christian Falk tweeted: "During the summer break, Manchester United contacted Sebastian Hoeneß (42), manager of VfB Stuttgart.

"Even before they extended the contract of head coach Erik ten Hag (54), the United bosses wanted to know whether Hoeneß would be available for the job as United's manager and inquired about possible transfer modalities. Hoeneß, however, declined."

MEN Sport says: United ultimately chose to stick with Ten Hag after the FA Cup triumph, despite the speculation over his future before and after the win over Manchester City. Liverpool and Bayern Munich seemingly found it difficult to outline a particular standout candidate to replace their outgoing managers. Tuchel, who left the Bavarians in the summer, is said to have turned down the role at Old Trafford during the summer.
