Jake Paul breaks boxing rule with controversial training video ahead of Mike Tyson fight

by · Manchester Evening News

Jake Paul has sparked controversy by posting a video of himself knocking down a sparring partner, violating an unspoken rule in boxing.

Paul is preparing for his highly contentious fight with Mike Tyson next month. The bout was initially scheduled for this summer before his opponent developed an inflamed ulcer.

The former undisputed heavyweight world champion has resumed his training after resting but hasn't posted any videos of his sessions since returning to the gym. However, Paul has been keeping his followers updated and recently shared a video on his social media account showing him knocking down his sparring partner, DeAndre Savage.

Savage, a heavyweight, has won six of his eight professional fights, stopping his opponents each time. His other two matches were declared no-contests, one due to an injury to his opponent and the other after an accidental blow, which led to his most recent outing ending early.

However, by posting the video, Paul has ignored the generally accepted boxing etiquette that what happens during sparring stays in the gym. In 2016, Chris Eubank Jr faced backlash from his then-upcoming opponent, Nick Blackwell, for sharing a video of himself knocking out one of his sparring partners.

Blackwell condemned the actions, stating: "He put a video up on social media, for the whole world to see, of him knocking out a kid who hasn't even had a pro fight, and it's disgusting. The amateur kid is building his confidence and trying to learn from a so-called professional, but somehow Eubank Jr takes pride in exploiting him like that."

One boxing enthusiast expressed dismay at Paul's video, remarking, "That was a horrible sparring partner," while another voiced their prediction bluntly: "He's in for a rude awakening if he's comparing that dude to Tyson."

A different fan remarked on the skill disparity, saying, "Big Mike is going to take bro's head off his shoulders." Yet another critic didn't hold back, commenting, "That dude had zero head movement, one of Mike's best attributes."
