Man United chiefs and Joel Glazer 'hold emergency meeting' to make Erik ten Hag future decision

by · Manchester Evening News

The Manchester United hierarchy are reportedly scheduled to meet next Tuesday in London – just 48 hours after what could potentially be Erik ten Hag's last game in charge.

The Dutchman is under pressure, with his position possibly at risk if the Red Devils suffer their fifth defeat of the season against Aston Villa this Sunday. Last Thursday, United looked set to secure their first victory in four games when they went two goals up against Porto in the Europa League.

But, Ten Hag's side blew their lead once more and found themselves trailing 3-2 with only 10 men on the pitch as extra time approached. Thankfully for the beleaguered United boss, Harry Maguire salvaged a 3-3 draw, despite going down to 10-men when Bruno Fernandes was sent off.

A loss to Villa could be the tipping point, with the club's top brass set to convene for discussions next week. According to the Mirror, this long-scheduled meeting will occur at the club's Kensington offices, with Joel Glazer expected to attend after flying in from the USA.

Glazer, who continues to serve as the club's executive co-chairman, is likely to be joined by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, INEOS head of sport Sir Dave Brailsford, United CEO Omar Berrada, sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox.

Chief financial officer Roger Bell and chief operating officer Collette Roche are also anticipated to be present, add the Mirror. The report claims that the future of Ten Hag, who's now in his third season after a £600m spending spree on new signings, may or may not be discussed at an upcoming meeting.

Speaking to BBC Sport on Friday, Ratcliffe refrained from commenting on Ten Hag's situation, stating that any decision regarding the manager's future would be made by Berrada and Ashworth. The British billionaire said: "I like Erik. He's a very good coach but at the end of the day it's not my call.

"It's the management team that's running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects. But that team that's running Manchester United has only been together since June or July.Get involved! Does Erik ten Hag deserve the sack? Have your say in the comments section."

Ratcliffe pointed out that key figures in the management team - Berrada and Ashworth - only joined in July. He added: "They weren't there in January, February, March or April - Omar, Dan Ashworth - they only arrived in July.

"They've only been there - you can count it in weeks almost - they've not been there a long time, so they need to take stock and make some sensible decisions."

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the managerial position, Ratcliffe is clear about the task ahead for United. He said: "Our objective is very clear - we want to take Manchester United back to where it should be. It's not there yet, obviously - that's very clear. There's work to be done."
