The six Plymouth Argyle fixtures before the next international break

Wayne Rooney's Pilgrims will resume their Championship campaign away to Cardiff City on Saturday

by · PlymouthLive

First the good news. The second international break of the season is behind us and Plymouth Argyle are back in Championship action at Cardiff City on Saturday.

Now the bad news. It is only another three weeks until the third international break of the 2024/25 campaign. Wayne Rooney's Pilgrims have six games over a 22-day period during that time. Argyle clinched three consecutive victories at Home Park during their last block of matches, beating Sunderland (3-2), Luton Town (3-1) and Blackburn Rovers (2-1), while losing 1-0 away to both West Bromwich Albion and Burnley.

They are in 14th position in the Championship going into the next block of games, with four of them against teams currently in the bottom seven of the table. Only one is against a current top 10 opponent, away to fifth-placed Leeds United at Elland Road. Here is a look at those forthcoming fixtures between now and Saturday, November 9.

Saturday, October 19 versus Cardiff City (A)

Cardiff, currently without a permanent head coach after the dismissal of Erol Bulut last month, are bottom of the Championship with just five points from nine games at the start of this season.

The Bluebirds lost their first three home games by 2-0 scorelines, against Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Leeds United, but did secure their first win of the campaign last time out at the Cardiff City Stadium as they beat Millwall 1-0 on October 1.

Wednesday, October 23 versus Millwall (A)

Argyle will return to The Den six months after their last visit to that part of south-east London, which was a 1-0 defeat in their penultimate match of the 2023/24 Championship campaign and heightened fears they would be relegated to League One, only for that threat to be lifted by a season-ending 1-0 home win against Hull City the following Saturday.

Neil Harris's Millwall are currently in 18th position with nine points from as many matches. They have won two of the four home league games, beating Sheffield Wednesday (3-0) and Preston North End (3-1), but have lost to Watford (3-2) and Luton Town (1-0).

Saturday, October 26 versus Preston North End (H)

Preston appointed Paul Heckingbottom as their new boss only a couple of weeks into this season after the departure of Ryan Lowe from Deepdale. Heckingbottom had been strongly linked with the Argyle managerial vacancy in the summer.

North End are currently 19th in the Championship with nine points. They have lost three of their five away league games, against Swansea City (3-0), Oxford United (3-1) and Millwall (3-1), and drawn the other two, against Middlesbrough (1-1) and Burnley (0-0).

Saturday, November 2 versus Leeds United (H)

Leeds lost in the Championship Play-Off Final to Southampton last season and are desperate to secure a return to the Premier League this time around. Daniel Farke's side are in fifth position at the moment with 16 points from nine matches.

United have won two of their home league games at Elland Road, beating Hull City (2-0) and Coventry City (3-). They also drew with Portsmouth (3-3) and lost to Burnley (1-0).

Tuesday, November 5 versus Portsmouth (H)

There should be a cracking atmosphere under the Home Park floodlights for this Tuesday night fixture between two sides who have had some exciting games against each other over recent seasons.

Portsmouth were the League One champions in 2023/24 but the step up to the Championship has not been easy for them. They are currently 23rd in the table with five points. They have drawn twice away from home, against Leeds United (3-3) and Middlesbrough (2-2) and lost at Burnley (2-1) and Stoke City (6-1).

Saturday, November 9 versus Derby County (A)

Derby were League One runners-up to Portsmouth last season and under boss Paul Warne have made a good start to this term, sitting in 12th place with 12 points from their first nine Championship games.

All four of their wins have come at home, beating Middlesbrough (1-0), Bristol City (3-0), Cardiff City (1-0) and Queens Park Rangers (2-0). The one team to avoid defeat at Pride Park have been Norwich City, who had a 3-2 victory over the Rams.
