Plymouth Argyle boss Wayne Rooney nominated for manager of the month award

The Pilgrims' boss led his side to impressive wins against Sunderland and Luton Town in the Championship during September

Wayne Rooney's efforts as Plymouth Argyle head coach have been recognised with his nomination for the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month award for September.

Rooney has been shortlisted for the prize along with John Eustace of Blackburn Rovers, Burnley boss Scott Parker and Sheffield United's Chris Wilder. Argyle picked up just two points from their first four league games of the season but September was much better for them.

First, they ended the 100 per cent record of Sunderland as they beat them 3-2 in a thriller at Home Park, with captain Joe Edwards scoring the winning goal in the third minute of added time.

Next, they pushed table-topping West Bromwich Albion all the way before losing 1-0 at The Hawthorns, and then they defeated Luton Town, one of the three relegated Premier League teams, 3-1 in a home Sky-televised clash.

Wilder looks most likely to win the manager of the month after guiding Sheffield United to 10 points from four games but, regardless, Rooney's nomination is recognition for the work he has been doing at Argyle after a very difficult start to the campaign.

The September nominations for the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month Award are:

John Eustace (Blackburn Rovers)

Eustace’s emphasis on the squad ethic meant his Rovers side dealt easily with injuries. Defensive solidity was the foundation for another unbeaten month with three clean sheets providing the platform to pick up seven points from three games.

Scott Parker (Burnley)

Parker’s tenure at Turf Moor has already seen half of his team leave in late August. Some shrewd transfer acquisitions later, he spent September moulding a new team together and still gained seven points from three unbeaten games.

Wayne Rooney (Argyle)

After a difficult start at Argyle, Rooney is winning over the Plymouth faithful with the 4-3-3 front foot style his team is playing. Two wins from three games each came with three goals against leaders Sunderland and newly relegated Luton.

Chris Wilder (Sheffield United)

The post-relegation gloom around Bramall Lane has been swept away by Wilder, who has built a new team and quickly established them as promotion candidates. Four unbeaten games yielded 10 points and a clean sheet in each one.

The winner will be announced tomorrow (October 11). The Sky Bet Manager of the Month judging panel comprises former Barnsley boss Danny Wilson, Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman, and Sky Bet EFL trader Ivor Davies.
