Highlights! Olympian Ben Whittaker suffers serious injury after crashing out of the ring vs. Liam Cameron | Riyadh Season

by · MMAmania.com

Light Heavyweight boxers Ben Whittaker vs. Liam Cameron threw down earlier tonight (Sat., Oct. 12, 2024) LIVE on DAZN from inside Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately, the highly competitive fight ended early when the two crashed over the top rope, resulting in an injury to Olympic silver medalist Whittaker.

Right away, the fight was a lot of fun. Whittaker was the faster man, and he used his speed to flash jabs and land quick combinations. Cameron understood the task at hand, however, pressuring forward and trying to counter with clubbing right hands. At first, Whittaker’s speed and jab were the controlling factors, but momentum slowly moved to Cameron’s corner.

In rounds two and three, the fight grew nasty. The two men were landing in the clinch and taking lumps out of each other, earning warnings from the referee for shoving and back-of-the-head punches. Whittaker still had volume on his side, but Cameron’s punches seemed to be landing with greater impact.

It was largely untested waters for the undefeated man. Whittaker responded to the adversity well enough, but Cameron seemed more effective in a brawl, and that’s exactly what the fight was turning into.

Sadly, it all went off the rails in the fifth round. As Cameron pressed Whittaker into the ropes, both men fell out of the ring entirely! Both seemed dazed from the crash, but it was Whittaker who struggled to stand afterward, suffering some sort of serious lower leg injury.

Check out the insane final moments below:

After the chaos, it wasn’t clear whether the outcome would be a “No Contest” or technical decision. It ultimately did go to the cards, and the judges scored the fight a draw, which felt appropriate given the success of both men and early ending. There was a lot of fight left in each, so hopefully a rematch can be booked when Whittaker heals up.

The match was a lot of fun for as long as it lasted.
