Scotland's Scott McTominay celebrates after scoring the opening goal

Man Utd star sounds alarm about a Scotland side who can make you suffer and squirm

They cruised to a 3-1 win in Poland at the weekend and although Dalot is expecting a tough game

by · Daily Record

Confident Manchester United star Diogo Dalot has ominously warned Scotland that Portugal are hitting their best form for years. Scotland face the in-form Portuguese tonight at Hampden, who have a 100 per cent record in the Nations League so far.

They cruised to a 3-1 win in Poland at the weekend and although Dalot is expecting a tough game, he reckons his side are at the top of their game. He said: "I think the first half in Poland was the best Portugal have played for many, many years. We could and should have scored a lot more goals because we created a lot of chances. We were well organised without the ball too.

"But Scotland will be a different type of game and we expect it to be difficult. There will be a good atmosphere which is typical of British football and stadiums. But we enjoy it when it's passionate like that. It's going to be a tough, physical match and you saw when we played them at home how much we suffered early on. We have to pay attention to what Scotland can do. For me, it’s always a pleasure to play for the national team. I always try to enjoy it to the fullest."

SCOTLAND v PORTUGAL - THE STORY SO FAR

1955, Friendly: SCOTLAND 3-0 Portugal.
Scotland cruised to an easy win in front of a disappointing crowd of just 20,856 after goals from Tommy Gemmell of St Mirren, Liverpool 's Billy Liddell and Hibs legend Lawrie Reilly's first ever international goal won it.

1966, Friendly: SCOTLAND 0-1 Portugal.

Portugal, with Eusebio in the side, warm up for the World Cup Finals in England later that summer with their first win in Scotland thanks to a goal from Benfica's Jose Torres. They would eventually lose to the hosts in the semi-finals.

1971, ECQ: SCOTLAND 2-1 Portugal.

Eusebio plays again at Hampden, but is on the losing side this time as Derby County duo John O'Hare and Archie Gemmill both net their first goals for Scotland. There were first caps for keeper Bob Wilson, future Arsenal boss George Graham and Hibs ace Alex Cropley.

1975, Friendly: SCOTLAND 1-0 Portugal.
A low-key friendly at Hampden sees manager Willie Ormond hand a first cap to future captain Bruce Rioch as the hosts win it after an own goal from Benfica's Artur Correia. Arthur Duncan of Hibs also comes off the bench to win his first cap.

1980, ECQ: SCOTLAND 4-1 Portugal.
Alex McLeish wins the first of his 77 caps as Scotland produce their biggest-ever win over the Portuguese thanks to goals from Kenny Dalglish, Andy Gray, Steve Archibald - who scored on his debut - and Archie Gemmil.

1980, WCQ: SCOTLAND 0-0 Portugal

Second game in a year at Hampden, but this time the Portuguese escaped with a draw. However, Jock Stein's Scots would get the last laugh because they qualified for the World Cup in Spain while Portugal didn't.

1992, WCQ: SCOTLAND 0-0 Portugal.

Hampden is being renovated so Ibrox hosts this forgettable encounter in front of just 22,583 fans. A strikeforce of Ally McCoist and Kevin Gallacher can't find a way past Porto keeper Victor Baia and the Scots would miss out on the World Cup for the first time in six campaigns.

2018, Friendly: SCOTLAND 1-3 Portugal.

No Cristiano Ronaldo, but no worries for the classy Portuguese who are three goals up through Helder Costa, Eder and Bruma before Steven Naismith's injury time consolation in front of less than 20,000 inside Hampden.
