Cambuslang Rugby Club pick up first win of the season

The Coats Park side also got the better of Cumnock for the first time in three attempts

by · Daily Record

A battling performance earned Cambuslang their first win of the season when they travelled to Cumnock and returned with a 21-14 victory.

It was a result that put the smiles back on the faces of the Coats Park players and boss Gavin Blackburn. Not only did they break their league duck, but it was also the first time they had beaten Cumnock in their last three attempts.

The visitors started brightly despite their disappointing start to the season, and they were rewarded after excellent interplay in the backs resulted in Andy Greenen breaking through the Cumnock defence, before putting Louis Senter through to score under the posts. Gregg Oehme converted to put Cambus 7-0 up.

Cumnock piled on the physical pressure but could not break the Cambuslang defence. And the visitors were soon back on the attack. More good play in the backs saw Andy Greenen turn from provider to scorer. Gregg Oehme again converted to take the lead to 14-0.

This sparked the home side into life, and they went on the hunt for points.

Gregg Oehme was sin binned for a high tackle and Cumnock exploited the extra man to score, making it 7-14 at the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern with both teams playing some excellent rugby on a dry, hard surface. Quickly after Gregg Oehme returned from the sin bin, his brother Cammy received a yellow card of his own, taking the hit for the team’s poor discipline.

Cumnock again sought to take advantage of the extra man, but Louis Senter made a brilliant interception of a wide pass and scampered almost the length of the pitch to score. Gregg Oehme again converted to take the score to 21-7.

Cumnock increased the tempo in search of a comeback score and their man advantage finally told with a converted try reducing the gap to seven points.

The last 10 minutes of the game were nail-biting. Cumnock attacked in waves and Cambuslang repelled them manfully.

Eventually, in the last play of the game, the Coats Park side won an excellent scrum penalty to end the game and secure the first win of the season.

Cambus have a break from league duty next week when they host fellow League 1 side Strathaven in the National Shield.
