Peter Cormack dead aged 78 as tributes flood in for Scotland and Liverpool legend

Liverpool and Hibs legend Peter Cormack has passed away at the age of 78.

The Merseyside club confirmed the tragic news as they paid tribute to the former Scotland midfielder on Friday morning.

A statement read: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of former midfielder Peter Cormack, aged 78. Rest in peace, Peter."

Cormack, who won nine caps for Scotland, previously revealed he was battling dementia.

He played under iconic Liverpool manager Bill Shankly during his four-year stint at Anfield between 1972 and 1976.

He won two First Division titles, the FA Cup and Uefa Cup - and played 125 games for Liverpool, scoring 21 times.

Prior to joining Liverpool, he came through at Hibernian and spent seven years with the Scottish side.

Cormack left for Nottingham Forest in 1970 where he scored 15 goals in 74 appearances.

His successful period at Liverpool ended in 1976 when he was sold to Bristol City - who he helped lift the Anglo-Scottish Cup in 1978.

He returned to Hibernian in 1980, hanging up his boots later that year following a brief spell with Patrick Thistle.
