Queen's Park hero can't believe he had the freedom of Hampden to down Accies

Jack Turner scored a vital winner for the Spiders against Hamilton

Queen’s Park hero Jack Turner admits he couldn’t believe his luck when he had the freedom of Hampden Park to put Hamilton Accies to the sword on Saturday.

But he insists it is all down to his gaffer nagging him to get into the box more often.

The midfielder netted the only goal of the game when he snuck in at the back post unmarked in 62 minutes, and was able to take a touch to control Henry Fieldson’s terrific delivery before smashing home the winner.

It was his sixth goal of the season and cemented fourth place in the Championship after the Spiders’ third win in four games.

And Turner explained gaffer Callum Davidson had a hand in the goal that inflicted a fourth defeat of the season on Accies.

The Englishman, 22, said: “I’m delighted. The gaffer has been on at me in training to get into the box, make those extra runs and shoot more, so I’m just glad it has come off.

“I couldn’t believe I was unmarked and it just fell to me. Henry has done well to get the ball in, it just fell to my feet and I had an open goal. It was a lucky one.

“It was always going to be one of those games where one goal would decide it and we are lucky we got it.

“Ten goals was my target at the start of the season so once I get there I’ll make a new target.

“This is where we want to be, in the top four fighting for promotion. If we keep playing like this, we will be up there.”

Spiders should have taken the lead in 32 minutes when a silky run from Fieldson saw him weave his way past three defenders and lay the ball on a plate for Ryan Duncan to score, but he somehow blazed over.

Down the other end, Lee Kilday had an acrobatic effort kept out by Calum Ferrie.

But Spiders found the breakthrough in 62 minutes when Fieldson fired a delivery across the face of goal and unmarked Turner was able to take a touch and fire home from six yards.

Accies spurned a great chance for a leveller in 83 minutes when Daire O’Connor dragged a volley wide when he should have found the target.

Boss Callum Davidson said: “We want to make Hampden a place people don’t enjoy coming – that is the message I’m trying to get through to the players.

“It is a great place to play football, but make sure our rivals work hard to get a result and we certainly did that.

“I thought it was great play by Henry at the goal.”
