Rangers fans bid to spoil Celtic party on the Hotline as Brendan Rodgers told Champions League comeuppance is coming

Mark Pirie manned the phones after a big night of European action at Celtic Park

There is only one place to start after Celtic's scintillating showing in the Champions League got everyone talking.

Brendan Rodgers' side steamrollered Slovan Bratislava to secure their first win of the revamped competition – and with the club sitting at the top of the Scottish Premiership and a positive start to the European campaign being made, excitement is reaching fever pitch among the support. Paul McCormack, Coatbridge couldn't hide his delight after the showing inside the Celtic Park cauldron "What an atmosphere for a 5 star, 5 goal performance from Celtic. The atmosphere was crackling and the team delivered a brilliant performance. Compare that to the Man City game, played with the atmosphere of a friendly. There's no equal to the match experience at Celtic Park on a Champions League night, no matter the opposition. Pep's club can't buy that."

Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton emailed in: "I’ve witnessed some disappointing opening Champions League matches at Celtic Park so to finally achieve a opening victory in such convincing style was fantastic. And one reason is instead of signing good players top class players are now our remit.

"Arne Engels, even this early, is having a similar influence in midfield as fellow countryman Kevin de Bryne at Man City. I believe he’s a upgrade on Matt O’Riley."

Arrin Geddes, Irvine took his chance to take a swipe at some of the Hotline's regular callers: "Celtic’s scintillating second half slaying of Slovan was something not seen at Celtic Park for too long. A special night indeed. Chris Lowe and Gary Stevenson can now go into hiding again for a couple of weeks."

But not everyone was impressed. Chris Lowe, Yoker wasn't won over by the showing from Celtic – as he pointed to their recent showings in Europe and Scotland's plummeting coefficient. He said: "Congratulations Celtic on finally winning a meaningful game in Europe.

"It’s been a long time coming, albeit against a team of Conference League standard. It wasn’t that long ago that Hungarian dishwashers and Scrabble teams were dismantling the Globetrotters so it’s good they’re finally contributing to the coefficient."

Jim McClean, Isle of Bute also chucked a list of caveats at the jubilant Hoops faithful. He said: "Yes a good result for Celtic but it was against poor opponents. Greg Taylor has gone backwards, Nicolas Kuhn has only one foot – his left – and that’s why the other teams have sussed that out, although he did have an assist with his right. He is a bit overrated, the next three ties will be a lot more difficult. Don’t go too overboard you Celtic fans."

Hotline ever-present Gordon Ashley was also in the firing line from the Rangers diehards. John Robertson emailed: "Just to remind Mr Ashley his Celtic team are a Mickey mouse outfit in a Mickey Mouse league. Brendan Rodgers will get found out just as he did at Liverpool and Leicester he where playing comeuppance soon in Europe well."

But not to be outdone Rangers were thrown a reminder of their own form Barriemore Barlow, Dunbartonshire. He said: "Rangers now know the gulf between them and Celtic is so big there can't be any doubt of who will win the league. Celtic won't get carried away with the Slovan result but it is a strong platform in which to continue building for the rest of the season."

Elsewhere, Tony Bloom's proposed investment in Hearts has also caught the eye. And John Scott, Grassmoor reckons it would be a big benefit for Scottish football: "The rumoured £10m investment in Hearts from Tony Bloom and his Starlizard group could also benefit the Hibees as well.

"Can you really see Bill Foley’s Black Knights letting their £6m investment in Hibs being devalued as Hearts race away to be Scotland’s undisputed third force? When Celtic eventually outgrow the Scottish Premiership (why else the burgeoning bank balance) and move on to a tougher league challenge elsewhere, Rangers will need stiff opposition from Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen to survive. Outside investment from sporting groups could be crucial for that to happen. So come on Tony Bloom, show Hearts your money."
