Creetown chief Martin McCaulay reckons a three week lay-off was behind his side’s sluggish start against Wigtown on Saturday.

His players led 2-1 at the break at Trammondford Park before turning on the style in the second half to run out 8-1 winners.

McCaulay, who was keeper last season and was on the bench for the Wigtown game, said: “It was our first game for three weeks as we had the international break then we had a game called off against Newton.

“I think that showed in the first half performance.

“We were 2-0 up and fairly comfortable without actually playing any decent football.

“There was no flow or temp in the first half.

“We got a penalty against us which was never a penalty but you’ve got to accept the decision and move on.

“We were too passive and there was no flow.

At half-time we said to the boys that the first half performance was just not playing for three weeks even though we’ve trained well.

“It’s not the same as proper games.

“We were comfortable but weren’t playing the football I know we can play.

“I was far happier with the second half performance.”

Goals from Josh Rennie and Dean Fyfe had Creetown 2-1 up at the interval.

After the break, Rennie scored twice more after the break to complete his hat-trick and Fyfe also got his second. Joe Mcmillan bagged a brace with a trialist also on target to complete a good day for the visitors.

McCaulay added: “I wasn’t happy with a couple of individual performances,

“I thought they could do better, and the boys I pulled up at half-time delivered in the second half.

“Big Josh was probably the only pass mark in the first half, he did everything he was meant to.

“The second half was more like wee Joe, he scored an absolute raker, and when he’s in that kind of form he’s unplayable.

“The subs I made also made an impact when they came on.

“I had a strong bench as I made a few changes and gave boys an opportunity then I made four subs at one time after about 60 minutes, so in the last half hour we just kicked on.”

Creetown are on their travels again this weekend as they head to Kirkcudbright to face St Cuthbert Wanderers.

And McCaulay is hoping his side can continue their good league form.

He explained: “I don’t think any other team than Lochar has had seven straight wins, but if we win on Saturday that’s what we’ll have done. Since I’ve taken charge, we’ve had six games in the league and six wins.

“I’ll be making another few changes. It’s a 3G pitch and some players suit some surfaces better than others.

“We’ll not be taking Saints lightly. It’s another good game for the boys to get back into the swing of things after having three weeks off.”
