Once considered the most exciting sport in the world, speedway was getting crowds that were even bigger than football.
From over 100,000 watching world finals across Europe to packed out crowds in the British League, it truly is Britain's forgotten sporting juggernaut. Four riders, four laps, no brakes. Every time a speedway rider steps onto the track, they are risking their lives… not that many of them ever think of it in that way.
It is a sport that still gives spectators butterflies in their stomachs and riders truly earn every penny that they make. At its best, it is fast and furious. At its worst, it is still fun and exciting.
It’s the growl of the engines, the smell of methanol and Castrol R, the colour of the jackets, the personalities, courage and sheer unquestionable fearlessness of the riders. It’s the fact that unlike most other motorsports, where you cannot see half the race, you can stand on the terrace and watch every single rev of the engine.
It was once the family night out of choice. Meetings were found as north as Edinburgh and as south as Exeter. World Championship finals would sell out Wembley.
