  • India aim to maintain their winning record against Bangladesh

India will kick off the much-anticipated home season with a two-match Test series against Bangladesh. The 1st Test match will take place at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on September 19, Thursday. India's relationship with Bangladesh in Test cricket has been somewhat distant, despite India welcoming Bangladesh to the format in 2000. It took 17 years for India to host Bangladesh for a Test. Unlike the intensity seen in their white-ball clashes, Test matches between these teams have not gained much significance. India has dominated the rivalry, winning 11 out of 13 games, with two matches resulting in draw.

Over the years, Bangladesh found it tough to secure consistent wins overseas. However, the nation has made strides, particularly with two notable victories in Pakistan, signalling a potential turning point for their Test side. India, on the other hand, has been nearly unbeatable at home, winning 17 consecutive series and losing only four Tests in the past 11 years. Bangladesh will face a daunting challenge, as this will be just their fourth Test appearance in India, with the first match being held in Chennai.

India vs Bangladesh over the years

The two teams faced each other for the first time in red-ball cricket in a one-off Test match on November 10, 2000. India managed a 9-wicket win over the hosts in their outing at Dhaka with Sunil Joshi's all-round show.

India toured Bangladesh for a 2-match series in 2004-05 and managed to win both the Tests. Both the wins were by an innings margin, with Sachin Tendulkar scoring 245 in the 1st Test and Irfan Pathan winning Player of the Match with magical figures of 9/96.

In 2007, the 1st match of the series between India and Bangladesh resulted in a draw despite hundreds from Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly. However, India emerged triumphant in a dominating fashion in the 2nd Test with a win by an innings and 239 runs.

The 2009–10 series was no different with India winning both the matches with a 113-run win in the 1st Test, followed by a 10-wicket win in the 2nd and Zaheer Khan being adjudged as the Player of the Series.

The one-off Test in 2015 resulted in a draw, despite India posting 462 runs on the board and a blistering century by Shikhar Dhawan earned him Player of the Match.

2017 was the first time Bangladesh toured India for Tests, but the visitors suffered a loss by 208 runs with a double century knock by Virat Kohli.

Bangladesh toured again in 2019 and were part of India's first-ever day and night game at home in Kolkata. However, India won the 1st match by an innings and 130 runs and the 2nd Test by an innings and 46 runs.

During India's tour to Bangladesh in 2022, the hosts came close to defeat India but the No. 1 Test side emerged victorious yet again, winning the series 2-0.
