  • Jaiswal will be key for India, feels Anil Kumble

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will be key in the final innings of the Mumbai Test match, said Anil Kumble. Speaking at the end of Day 2's play on Saturday, Kumble argued that if Jaiswal can play a good knock in the 4th innings of the Mumbai Test match, things will get easier for India.

At the end of Day 2, the Indian team trailed by 143 runs against Tom Latham's New Zealand. Despite Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja's brilliance, New Zealand were able to tick away with runs, closing in on a 150 lead.

The Wankhede Stadium pitch showed signs of becoming a rank turner, late on Day 2 of the 3rd Test. New Zealand batters found it very difficult to negotiate Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, who made merry on the Wankhede pitch on Saturday.

Speaking on Jio Cinema after the day's play Kumble argued that having Jaiswal at the crease might neutralise the effect of Ajaz Patel.

"Yashasvi Jaiswal is going to be key for India. As a left-hander, his main job will be to negate Ajaz Patel. He should not just get a start and throw it away like in the first innings. You want him to get going because it is not going to be easy once the ball gets older and things start happening on the surface. If Jaiswal gets a good start, things will be easier for India," Anil Kumble said on Saturday.

R Ashwin returned to form in the Test series with 3 wickets to his name, removing dangerous batters like Will Young and Glenn Phillips. Ashwin bowled two terrific carrom balls to the batters - first dismantling Phillips' stumps and then completing a simple catch off his own bowling against Will Young.

However, despite the brilliance of the spinners, New Zealand was able to stretch its lead up to 143 runs on Day 2 of the Test match. This begs the question, what is the highest ever successful chase ever completed at the Wankhede Stadium?

The highest-ever successful chase in the fourth innings of a Test match was by South Africa, back in 2000. Led by Hanjse Cronje, South Africa completed a successful chase of 163 runs. The Proteas scored 164 runs in the final innings of the match against Sachin Tendulkar's Indian team.

164 is the only triple-digit chase ever made at the Wankhede Stadium. The second-highest chase was completed by England, when they chased down 96 runs against India back in 1980.
