The goalkeeper was visibly in pain after falling into his own box as he was carried off the pitch on a stretcher.

All of ter Stegen's weight fell on his right leg as he injured the same knee on which he had already undergone two surgeries in recent years, and another surgery could prove season-ending, Spanish media had earlier reported.

Ter Stegen adds to the long list of Barcelona's existing injuries. Including the goalkeeper, Barcelona has a total of 8 players injured at the moment. Gavi, Marc Bernal. Andreas Christensen, Frenkie de Jong, Ronald Araujo, Dani Olmo, and Fermin Lopez are undergoing some form of treatment at the moment.

Barcelona maintained their perfect start to LaLiga with a commanding 5-1 victory over Villarreal on Sunday, September 22. However, the triumph was overshadowed by a potentially serious knee injury to goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who had to be stretchered off the field.

The win marked Barcelona's sixth consecutive league victory, but the match was not without its drama. Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha both netted twice, with Lewandowski also missing a penalty in an entertaining clash at Villarreal's Estadio de la Ceramica. Ayoze Perez briefly pulled Villarreal back into the contest just before halftime, but it was not enough to stem the tide.
