In Short

  • Gill scored an 8-ball duck on day one of Chennai Test
  • This was Gill's third duck at home in 2024
  • Kohli also had a failure on day one of Chennai Test

Shubman Gill joined Virat Kohli in an unwanted ducks list with his failure on day one of the Chennai Test against Bangladesh on Thursday, September 19. Gill was dismissed for an 8-ball duck at the Chepauk as he didn't look comfortable at all during the knock. Bangladesh bowlers were constantly trying to make Gill play on the leg side to get a knick and it paid off in the end.

In the third ball of the 8th over, Hasan Mahmud would once again put the ball on the leg side of Gill. It would force the batter to attempt a flick and the ball found the edge and went to Litton Das. This was Gill's third duck at home this year and with this he would join an unwanted list with Kohli. This made Gill the 6th Indian batter to have 3 or more ducks in a calendar year. Mohinder Amarnath in 1983 leads the unwanted list with 5 ducks to his name.

The list also contains Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (1969), Dilip Vengsarkar (1979) and Vinod Kambli (1994). Kohli had got 3 ducks at home during 2021.

Gill was dismissed twice for a duck during the series at home against England this year. The first one came in the second innings of the Hyderabad Test and the other one in the first innings of the Rajkot Test. Gill would, however, have a stunning series despite the setbacks as he scored 2 hundreds and 2 fifties during the series against England.
