Unlucky 99: Rishabh Pant joins MS Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly in unwanted Test list

Rishabh Pant has joined MS Dhoni in the unwanted 99 list in Test cricket. On Saturday (October 10), the left-handed batter got out for 99 off 105 balls with 18 fours and three sixes against Tom Latham’s New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. On Day 4 of the Test, Pant was looking good for his seventh Test hundred before William O’Rourke accounted for his wicket.

The 27-year-old Pant also joined MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly in the list of Indian batters to have got out on 99 in Test cricket. Back in 1997, Ganguly made 99 against Sri Lanka in Nagpur, followed by his 99 against England in 2002 at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. MS Dhoni got out for 99 back in December 2012 against England in Nagpur after Alastair Cook ran him out.

The other Indian batters to have got out in 99 are Motganhalli Laxminarsu Jaisimha (1960 against Pakistan in Kanpur), Pankaj Roy (1959 against Australia in Delhi), Virender Sehwag (2010 against Sri Lanka in Colombo), Navjot Singh Sidhu (1994 against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru), Rusi Framroze Surti (1968 against New Zealand in Auckland), Murali Vijay (2014 against Australia in Adelaide) and Ajit Wadekar (1967-68 against Australia in Melbourne).
