In Short

  • Yashasvi Jaiswal battled in tough conditions to hit another home Test fifty
  • Yashasvi shed his natural flair to strike at less than 50 on a a tricky day in Chennai
  • India recovered from 144 for 6 to reach 339 for 6 at Stumps on Day 1

A trial by pace came sooner than expected for Yashasvi Jaiswal. The young opener would have expected a testing opening session against the likes of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood in Perth, but it came on September 19 against a trio of Bangladesh pacers. The opening day of India's first Test of the home season in Chennai was played under dark skies and on a pitch that had a tinge of green.

Bangladesh pacers, especially Hasan Mahmud, got the ball to move both ways in an unfamiliar sight at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, leaving the Indian top-order in a spot of bother. Rohit Sharma was undone on 6 by a brilliant delivery that seamed away after pitching in the off-stump line. Virat Kohli chased a wider delivery and was caught behind for 6. Shubman Gill was caught down the leg-side for naught as Hasan was running riot in London-like conditions in Chennai.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was also tested. The young opener, who had scored a record-breaking tally of 712 runs in a five-Test series against England at home, curbed his attacking instincts and played the situation wonderfully well. Yashasvi said he has no complaints about the nature of the pitch in Chennai and he was thrilled that a testing time in the middle will help learn valuable lessons ahead of tougher tests in the remainder of the season.

"It was amazing to go out there and play in these conditions. It will make me strong and I will learn from it as to how to play in all these conditions and how to plan my innings," Jaiswal said while addressing the media after the first day's play.

"I try to bat according to the requirements of my team and keep changing my game accordingly. If the wicket falls initially, how can I bat? When the runs are coming, how can I bat?" he added.

Yashasvi survived the testing phase and hit another Test fifty, the fifth in his career as he continued his dream home run. While Yashasvi did not go after the bowlers like he did earlier this year against England, the young batter was willing to look ugly and grind it out in the middle. Yashsasvi hit 56 off 118 balls at a strike rate of less than 50.

The young batter was dismissed in the second session by Nahid Rana with a sharp bouncer. Yashasvi looked gutted as he prepared when India were looking to claw back into the contest after losing early wickets. At one point in the first session, India were reeling at 34 for 3 before Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi rescued them.

However, none of the top six batters, including Pant and KL Rahul, were able to convert their starts into big knocks. India slipped to 144 for 6 before R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja flaunted their all-round ability with an unbeaten 195-run stand. Ashwin went on to hit a rapid hundred, his sixth in Tests, while Jadeja remained unbeaten on 86.

INDIA IN A GOOD POSITION: YASHASVI

While crediting the opposition bowlers, Yashasvi said India managed to reach a dominant position.

"Initially, I think the ball was moving a bit and seaming a bit and the wicket was a bit down. So, we took our time. But if you see in the last session, we scored quite well and I think we are in a good position at the moment," he added.

India will resume their innings at 339 for 6 with Ashwin and Jadeja looking to add to the tally and pile up the pressure on Bangladesh, who looked deflated in the final session.
