George Baldock's farewell message to Sheffield United fans has resurfaced following his tragic death in Greece aged 31 - telling them their support was "more than he ever expected" before moving to Panathinaikos.

Baldock's death has shocked the world of football after being found in a swimming pool at his home in Greece, with his wife allegedly unable to get into contact with him after several hours.

Emergency services were called after his body was found, with a doctor part of the response unit verifying that he had tragically died before the news circulated on Wednesday evening.

Baldock had only spent five months with his new club Panathinaikos before his death, having left Sheffield United on a free transfer, and gave a poignant message in his last interview with the Blades reflecting on his time with the club.

'To all you Sheffield United fans, it's a huge thank you from me," he said. "You've been absolutely amazing. Your support has been so much more than I ever expected. You're the best around.

"Keep supporting the team and the staff and hopefully the club can get back to where we all want it to be. I leave here as a massive fan of the club. Good luck and thank you."

He became a favourite at Bramall Lane after appearing 219 times for the team, helping them win promotion to the Premier League on two occasions.

Sheffield United also released a tribute, saying: "Sheffield United Football Club is shocked and extremely saddened to learn of the passing of former player, George Baldock. The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him.

"The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends."

Panathinaikos added: "We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George. The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock."
