Former Derry underage star in line to make NFL debut for New York Giants

Former Derry underage footballer Jude McAtamney could make his NFL debut for the New York Giants on Sunday.

The Swatragh man looks likely to be asked to step in after the Giants' current starting kicker, Greg Joseph, was ruled out of the clash with Washington Commanfers after suffering an abdomen injury.

McAtamney would become the first Derryman to start a regular season game in the NFL.

After impressing in pre-season games, the 24-year-old has been part of the Giants' practice squad this season.

As part of the International Player Pathway, he is eligible for a place on the practice squad for three seasons and can be elevated to the active roster for this weekend's game.

"I'm just preparing every week to be ready, even if I'm not playing," McAtamney told BBC Sport NI in October.

"Every week is a learning opportunity, and I feel like I'm learning and getting better as time goes on."

McAtamney represented Derry at U20 level, winning an Ulster title in 2020, before moving to the United States to play American football with Rutgers University.
