Steve Bruce releases heartbreaking statement on Blackpool return after death of grandson

Steve Bruce is set to return to the dugout this weekend for the first time since the tragic death of his four-month-old grandson, Madison.

Bruce, who was named as Blackpool's new manager last month, has taken some time away from football following his grandson's passing. Madison was the son of former Millwall, QPR and Salford striker Matt Smith, who married Bruce's daughter Amy.

The former Manchester United defender has missed Blackpool's games against Barnsley, Peterborough and Wigan, but will return for their FA Cup trip to Gillingham on Saturday. And in a heartbreaking statement shared by Blackpool, Bruce thanked fans for their support and urged people to "look after your loved ones".

He said: "On Tuesday we laid my grandson Madison to rest. It's been the worst time of my family's entire lives and is something no family should have to endure. I'd like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the family to thank everyone for the tributes and messages from inside and outside the footballing world.

"It has touched us all. I'd also like to thank David, Julian, and the owner Simon for their understanding and support. I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday at Gillingham, and back at Bloomfield Road. Look after your loved ones."

Madison's death was described as "sudden and unexpected" when it was announced earlier this month, with a statement from Blackpool reading: "Everyone at the football club send their love to Steve and his family.

"We ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with this sudden and unexpected loss in their family." Bruce's son Alex, who is currently Salford's assistant manager, also took a step back from his role following Madison's passing.

Blackpool currently sit 16th in League One, having made a poor start to the season under previous manager Neil Critchley. He was axed after just two league games in August, with Bruce appointed two weeks later.

The 63-year-old has overseen a major upturn in Blackpool's form, suffering just one league defeat since taking charge. However, the Tangerines have failed to pick up a win in any of the three games they have played since Bruce stepped away from the dugout.
