Manchester United have officially parted ways with Ruud van Nistelrooy following the appointment of Ruben Amorim as the new head coach.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former United striker and club legend, returned to Old Trafford during the summer to assist Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff but found himself thrust into an interim managerial role after ten Hag was dismissed on October 28.

During his brief tenure as interim head coach, van Nistelrooy showcased his capabilities, leading the team to an impressive unbeaten run over four matches.

This stint included a convincing 3-0 victory against Leicester City in the Premier League, which marked the culmination of his temporary managerial role.

Before that successful outing, he secured victories against Leicester in the Carabao Cup and against PAOK in the Europa League, and a Premier League draw against Chelsea.

Amorim was officially named as Ten Hag’s permanent successor on November 1, signalling a new direction for the club. His first match in charge is scheduled for November 24, when the team will travel to face Ipswich Town in a highly anticipated Premier League clash.

While the specifics of Amorim’s coaching staff are still being finalized, it has been confirmed that van Nistelrooy will not remain with the team and will exit along with other coaching figures, including Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar, and Pieter Morel.

Following the victory on Sunday, Amorim expressed his intention to meet with Ruud van Nistelrooy on Monday to discuss the former striker’s future at the club. However, reports claimed that the Portuguese coach decided against retaining the former Manchester United player.

A statement from Manchester United confirming Van Nistelrooy’s exit reads: “Ruud is, and always will be, a Manchester United legend.

“We are grateful for his contribution and how he has approached his role throughout his time with the club. He will always be very welcome at Old Trafford.”

In an interview with The Athletic, Amorim spoke highly of van Nistelrooy, recognizing his legendary status and contributions to Manchester United. He said, “He did a great job. I have to talk with him tomorrow (Monday). Then I will explain everything. I am very clear, and I will tell you what it is. Let’s wait until tomorrow.”

Before rejoining United, van Nistelrooy had a brief managerial stint at PSV Eindhoven, where he left just one match before the end of the 2022-2023 season.

Additionally, he was engaged in discussions with Burnley regarding a potential role as head coach, aimed at filling the position left by Vincent Kompany.

As a player, van Nistelrooy left an indelible mark on Manchester United, netting an impressive 150 goals in 219 appearances for the club between 2001 and 2006. His subsequent career included spells at Real Madrid, Hamburg, and Malaga.
