The President of the Libyan Football Federation, Abdelhakim Al-Shalmani, has officially resigned from his position during a routine meeting of the Federation’s General Assembly.

The resignation was announced by Al-Shalmani himself on Sunday, as reported by The Libya Observer, an English and Arabic online newspaper based in Tripoli, Libya.

In his statement, Al-Shalmani expressed his reluctance to be associated with the perceived failure in Libyan sports, citing the challenges faced during his tenure.

“I do not want to be part of the failure in Libyan sports”, he was quoted as saying.

“We faced difficulties during the previous period.

“I thank all members of the General Assembly, and I forgive everyone from all segments of the sports sector.

“I have a history in the International, Arab, and African Federation, and no one can deny that.”

This development came amidst escalating tensions between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Libyan national team ahead of the All African Cup of Nations qualifier scheduled for Tuesday.

Note that the Libyan authorities reportedly subjected the Super Eagles to what was described as ‘inhumane treatment’ upon their arrival in the country. The Super Eagles were allegedly left stranded at Al Abraq International Airport for over 16 hours, prompting concerns and sparking controversy.

In response, the Libyan Football Federation clarified that the delay experienced by the Nigerian team was due to routine air traffic and logistical challenges, refuting any deliberate malicious intent.

However, the Super Eagles of Nigeria have landed in Kano via a chartered flight today, October which means that the scheduled qualification game on Tuesday won’t take place as earlier planned.
