The family of former Sheffield United defender George Baldock has confirmed the demise of the 31-year-old player.

George Baldock was reportedly found dead in the swimming pool of his house in Glyfada, southern Athens, Greece.

A statement from his family on October 11, 2024, reads: “We can confirm that George has sadly passed away. As a family, we are in shock at this terrible loss.”

At the time of his demise, George Baldock was playing for the Greek club Panathinaikos. He joined the club in 2024 and has made four appearances for them after playing for Sheffield United from 2017 to 2024. He last played for the Greek club in their 0-0 draw with Olympiakos on Sunday, October 6.

“We are shocked, we are shocked by the loss of our George,” Panathinaikos said in a statement.

“The family of Panathinaikos mourns his untimely death. We stand with the family and loved ones of George Baldock.”

A report by Reuters news agency, citing a police official, noted that police attempted to resuscitate Baldock at the scene but he could not be revived as medical emergency units confirmed his death.

“The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff and team-mates who pulled on a red and white shirt alongside him”, Sheffield United said in a statement.

“The sincere condolences of everyone associated with Sheffield United are extended to George’s family and friends.”

George Baldock, who was not invited to Greece’s Nations League campaign this October, has played 12 times for the country, which he adopted through the ancestral connection with his grandmother.

While mourning the English-born footballer, the Greece national team said: “With profound sadness and sorrow, the national team and the Greek Football Federation bid farewell to George Baldock.

“There are no words to describe the human pain caused by the news of the unexpected loss of one of our young men. The moment forces silence. Condolences to his family. Condolences from his second family.”
