Player ‘would welcome’ leaving Wolves for specific club – January move floated as manager quizzed

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Gonçalo Guedes was on loan at Benfica and Villarreal last season.

The forward was a regular for the La Liga side in the second half of last season, scoring three goals and registering three assists from 19 games. He returned to Wolves in the summer and has struggled for regular game time this season.

Guedes has scored three goals in two EFL Cup games for Wolves this season, but that wasn’t enough to convince Gary O’Neil to start him in the Premier League. He’s been limited to 122 minutes from eight league games.

The La Liga side are considering signing him in the winter market, according to Cadena Ser.

At the weekend, Villarreal winger Ilias Akhomach suffered a serious knee injury in his side’s 3-0 win over Deportivo Alavés. The 20-year-old Moroccan’s setback has seen the Yellow Submarine look for options in the market.

The Spanish club’s sporting leaders are working on the possibility of signing Guedes on loan in January. Due to his situation at Wolves, it’s claimed the attacker ‘would welcome’ a move back to Villarreal.

Guedes has played under Marcelino at Villarreal and Valencia. On Monday, the manager had a chat with Movistar Plus, relayed by Marca, where he was asked about the possibility of signing the Wolves player in January.

“It’s still early for that. As the season goes on, we will see if there is a need, more based on injuries than performance. In attack we haven’t yet been able to count on Gerard [Moreno], although we hope he returns and gives us a great performance. Together with the club and the medical staff we will see how the injured are and we will assess,” he said.
