‘He’s lost his guardian’ – Liverpool player has ‘weight on shoulders’ after Klopp exit, concern in home country

Darwin Núñez has a ‘weight on his shoulders’ at Liverpool after losing his biggest supporter at the club in Jurgen Klopp.

That’s according to El País in Uruguay, who are concerned about their striker today as he fails to impress under Arne Slot at Liverpool this season.

The newspaper explains that while bad streaks are not strange to Núñez, nor how to get over them, he currently finds himself struggling to break through the latest one.

The striker has barely featured at Liverpool this season, with just four Premier League appearances and 21% of the available minutes played in so far.

Núñez highly values the support of his entourage, teammates and coaching staff but has lost some of those things in recent months. At Liverpool in particular the newspaper say ‘he’s lost his guardian’ in Klopp.

The former Liverpool coach always trusted him, defended him from criticism and even argued that he just needed time to reach his maximum performance. That’s not been the case under Slot, who has preferred other options and left the Uruguayan on the bench.

The Dutch coach has taken a different approach to Klopp, relegating him to a substitute role while he ‘works with him on specific details’. That’s led to reduced numbers and little prospect of it improving as Liverpool’s forward line has shone at the beginning of the season.

That’s led to concern in Uruguay, where they seem to think their man isn’t being given a fair shot after Klopp’s departure.
