Father backs son after he rejected move to Aston Villa – Stuck to what he wanted

Aston Villa made efforts to sign Weston McKennie from Juventus in the summer, as negotiations went on regarding Douglas Luiz’s transfer to Turin.

The move didn’t go through despite Juve excluding the midfielder from their project, as McKennie’s high wage demands were never matched by Unai Emery’s club.

That saw Aston Villa and Juventus have to negotiate over other players, and McKennie was later reinstated into the squad. He’s now getting some redemption, having scored in the Champions League against PSV last week.

McKennie’s father, John McKennie, has now spoken to IlBianconero about the turbulent summer and said:

“Sometimes you find yourself with your head under water, and when that happens it is essential to stay away from danger. 

“Weston has always had confidence in himself, a confidence that, combined with the awareness of what he wanted, gave him this important opportunity.”

It is perhaps that confidence in himself that made McKennie ask for such a high wage from Aston Villa, and it is the same confidence which has helped him start the season well.

His father also spoke about his expectations for this season.

“I think Weston had a good season last year too, although there is always room for improvement. Personally, I hope he shoots more when he has the chance.”

Considering how things have turned out for Aston Villa and how they are third in the table, losing out on McKennie isn’t something they would regret.

One of those situations which looks like it’s worked out well for both clubs and the player.
