‘Made a lot of progress’ – Tottenham put in firm efforts before walking away from signing this summer

Tottenham Hotspur were one of the clubs to have looked at Alessandro Buongiorno in the summer window, according to Calciomercato.

The centre-back was one of the standout players at Torino last season and featured 31 times in all competitions.

His displays for the Serie A side had caught the attention of clubs in Italy and abroad, including Tottenham. Napoli were eventually successful in securing his services in July.

Napoli will take on Juventus in the league later today. Ahead of this clash, Calciomercato provides a background on why the Old Lady missed out on Buongiorno.

It’s claimed Thiago Motta’s side tabled a concrete offer, but the 25-year-old wasn’t willing to leave Torino for Juve.

As well as Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan and Tottenham were also there to sign the player. The Rossoneri made contacts, just like their local rivals, when Stefan de Vrij had received attention from Saudi Arabia. The Dutchman is still at Inter.

Calciomercato state Spurs ‘made a lot of progress’ to secure the Italy international’s services, but they decided to focus on other targets.

Tottenham finished the window without adding a new centre-back to their squad.
