Newcastle United injury news with Isak, Pope and Schar doubts for Everton clash

Eddie Howe's side have a number of big payers potentially missing for their trip to Goodison Park

by · ChronicleLive

Eddie Howe and Newcastle United are in the midst of a mini injury crisis heading into this weekend's Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park. The Toon could be without as many nine first-team players for Saturday's game with Sean Dyche's struggling side.

The Toffees have taken just four points from their opening six games and Newcastle have a good opportunity to close the gap to the European places. The Carabao Cup clash with AFC Wimbledon in midweek caused further concern for Eddie Howe after Martin Dubravka took a knock his knee, Fabian Schar hobbled off the other night and Nick Pope missed the game entirely with swelling on his knee from Saturday's draw with Man City

“I think we’re OK," Howe said when asked about Newcastle's injury situation after the win over the Wombles. "Martin Dubravka’s taken a nasty bang to his knee, we hope he’s all right but we’ll see how he settles down tomorrow. Hopefully no major injuries from the game.

“Fabian had a couple of issues, his ankle and other things but hopefully he’ll be all right and it’s not serious. We don’t think (Pope’s injury) is serious. It’s just a bit of swelling on his knee. We’re hopeful he will be fit for Everton on Saturday.”

Alexander Isak and Kieran Trippier could return for the trip to Goodison Park, but all five aforementioned players are doubts for the game/

Alexander Isak

Injury: Foot

What Howe has said: "It was one of those situations where, if Alex could tolerate the pain, he would be fine. He tolerated the pain for about 80 minutes (at Fulham) before he became aware of any feeling back in that toe. It was either he’d be out until probably after the international break initially, or he could carry on playing as normal if he could tolerate the feelings and the effects of the injury. He hasn’t been able to do that, so we’re back to the original diagnosis, I think.

"We're sort of assessing him on a daily basis because there is a chance he could be fit for Everton if everything falls into place. Of course, then we have a decision to make. Does he play in that game or do we leave him knowing that he'll be OK two weeks afterwards?"

Potential return date: October 5th

Kieran Trippier

Injury: Unknown

What Howe has said [September 30th]: "We will wait and see how Kieran [Trippier] is. He felt OK yesterday, but we are not sure if he will be ready for tomorrow."

Callum Wilson

Injury: Back

The United No 9's back injury which kept him out for most of pre-season is taking longer to recover than all parties had hoped. Wilson was initially ruled out until the September international break, but his continued absence is frustrating for both Howe and the player. United will have to wait until after the October international before they can include the former England striker in their matchday squad.

What Howe has said: "Callum Wilson won't make the game. We will be looking at next international break."

Potential return date: October 19th

Sven Botman

Injury: ACL

Botman is stepping up his progress after undergoing surgery on his ACL last spring, but will not be rushed back. The Dutch defender has posted regular updates on social media, with a return to training getting closer. However, he is still expected to be out until the end of December.

Potential return: Unknown

Jamaal Lascelles

Injury: ACL

Like Botman, Lascelles is undergoing a long recovery period after an ACL operation, and is unlikely to be available much before the start of 2025. The United captain has been hard at work in the gym, but the club are keen to ensure he will only return when he is fully recovered.

Potential return: Unknown

Lewis Miley

Injury: Toe

A broken metatarsal ended Miley's pre-season almost before it began, as the 18-year-old was forced to miss almost all of the summer programme. A three-month recovery period is usual in these cases, so he could potentially return for the game at Everton at the start of October, although the post-international break fixtures are perhaps more likely.

What Howe has said: “Lewis Miley is still a long way off. He’s back on the grass but he’s not back with us," the Toon boss said before Fulham.

Potential return date: October 19th
