Newcastle were without Alexander Isak, so Gordon started up front, while City were missing Rodri, the heartbeat of their midfield. Despite this absence, it was City who struck first, taking the lead after Jack Grealish slipped in Josko Gvardiol, who finished calmly.

After going into the break behind, NUFC came out the blocks flying, with Anthony Gordon being fouled by City goalkeeper Ederson in the penalty area just over 10 minutes into the second half. Newcastle's number 10 sent him the wrong way, levelling the scores at 1-1.
