Tino Livramento handed Newcastle United motivation as Lee Carsley drops major hint

Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon's England call-ups were celebrated on Tyneside this week but the omission of Tino Livramento is a reminder of the work the Newcastle full-back has to do to become a regular for his country.

Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold, with their 124 caps between them, are the two right-backs Lee Carsley opted for in his third and final England squad for the upcoming clashes with Greece and the Republic of Ireland. Livramento will instead link up with the under-21 side, despite a solid run of form for the Magpies of late.

The motivation for the young full-back will be to prove undroppable going forward as his former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel prepares to take over in the New Year. A continuation of his Newcastle performances will make that a reality - but for now, Carsley hints Livramento will be one of many frustrated not to be involved with the senior side this time around.

“It’s a real challenge to pick the squad, there are four or five players who will be disappointed not to be involved," the interim boss said on Thursday. "That’s a big challenge and the next one will be getting through this weekend so the players will be here fully fit.

"We know a lot of the squad are carrying injuries and managing them. Hopefully we get a full set and we can pick the strongest team we can. I don’t see this as a legacy for me, we want to get the best results we can and want promotion in the Nations League.”

Livramento was handed a call-up for the September internationals, while he was drafted into the senior side last month after initially being selected for the Under-21s. The former Southampton right-back is yet to play a single minute for the Three Lions at the highest level but the imminent arrival of Tuchel will boost his chances of making future squads due to their relationship together.

The German coach was powerless when attempting to keep Livramento at Chelsea, as the youngster sought out first-team football with a move to St Mary's.

“Yes of course he was highly rated,” Tuchel said during his time as Blues boss. “We did everything to keep him here, to show him his future and his possibilities to compete for a position in our team.

“He decided to go, that was his decision and you sometimes have to accept. There are not hard feelings because we can show him possibilities and then it is on the player. He was of course competing with Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta on the right wing-back position."

At 21, Livramento has time on his side to become a regular at international level as well as for Newcastle. Walker is approaching the end of his England career, while Kieran Trippier is already facing a competitive battle to wrestle his spot back from Livramento at St James' Park.
