A 62-year-old Brit enjoying a sun-soaked holiday in Cyprus has been identified as the victim of a tragic incident which took place near a holiday resort on the island.

Eyewitnesses report seeing the unidentified 62-year-old man swimming in the sea at a beach in the tourist hotspot Peyia, but at some point he disappeared from view. The beach is located in the crystal clear water of Coral Bay, which is on the west of the Mediterranean island.

Sunbathers are said to have rushed to the man's aid and pulled him from the water. After being dragged ashore, an ambulance crew performed CPR on the British tourist at the beach before rushing him to a nearby hospital.

At the Paphos General Hospital, the 62-year-old Brits was pronounced dead in the Accident and Emergency department. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the man's cause of death, local media reports.

Peyia, near to where the tragedy took place, is a town in the Paphos District of the island that is popular with tourists seeking sparkling waters and sun-drenched beaches.

Just last month, another person, aged 87, died while swimming in the Coral Bay, which is near Peyia, and littered with caves along its rocky headlands. The man was found floating unconscious in the water, but was pulled from the water by holidaymakers and later pronounced dead.
