Wolverhampton outbuilding fire spread to flat as resident 'led to safety'

A fire ripped through a general storage outbuilding behind several terraced flats before spreading to one of the properties. Firefighters led one resident to safety as medics and police also descended on the scene in Wolverhampton.

The fire broke out in Showell Road, Bushbury, just before 2.40am on Monday, October 21. Thirty firefighters tackled the blaze, with crews called in from Dudley, Willenhall, Bloxwich, Bilston, Wolverhampton and Fallings Park stations.

Cadent and National Grid engineers also attended to isolate gas and electric to affected properties. Three properties were smoke-logged, with residents from affected flats being rehomed. Firefighters remained at the scene until all hotspots were extinguished at 5.37am.

A West Midlands Fire Service spokesperson said: "This was a fire in a general storage outbuilding to the rear of several terraced flats. The fire spread to one flat and one resident inside the affected property was led to safety by firefighters. Paramedics and police officers were in attendance.

"All of the flats were searched by crews and everyone was accounted for. There were no further rescues or casualties. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used four hose reels to extinguish the fire. A revisit has taken place in daylight hours and a hotspot was damped down using a hose reel. Firefighters will revisit the scene later this morning."
