All Birmingham Airport flights delayed and diverted amid major police incident

All Birmingham Airport departures and arrivals have been suspended during a major ongoing incident at the airport. The site has been fully evacuated following a report of suspicious vehicle in the area.

Thousands of passengers are set to be affected this afternoon, October 23, as 999 crews work to secure the scene. All airport operations are currently impacted and anyone heading for the airport has been told to stay away.

The departures and arrivals board at BHX is showing scores of flights delayed, and thousands of people are tracking incoming flights to Birmingham on live air traffic sight flightradar. The number one tracked flight in the world at the moment is a Jet2 flight from Mahon to Birmingham, the fourth is Guernsey to Birmingham and the fifth is Birmingham to Larnaca.

The Mahon flight is understood to be the last flight to arrive into BHX before it was sealed off. A Birmingham Airport spokesperson said: “West Midlands Police is currently dealing with an ongoing incident on-site. Airport operations are currently impacted, and passengers should not come to the airport at this time.

"The airport’s social channels will be updated as and when the situation changes. For passengers with immediate flights this afternoon they should contact their airline and check the Airport’s website for updates.”

There are a number of impacted arrivals and departures at BHX including Ryanair Rhodes, Ryanair Murcia, Jet2 Faro, easyJet Amsterdam, Blue Islands Jersey, Aer Lingus Belfast City and Logainair Aberdeen.

Police have said the evacuation is a precautionary measure.

All transport links have been suspended, the trains and services 97A, X1 and X12 are unable to serve the terminal stops. The nearest stops are at Birmingham International Station. The main road to Birmingham Airport is also closed. Pictures from the scene show hundreds of people being evacuated from the airport as it was sealed off and a cordon put in place.
